This coin has been struck since 2013 with a fineness of 999/1000. The image featured on the 1 oz silver Britannia coin in years ending in an even number has been Britannia with a shield.
A new Britannia design was minted in odd-numbered years. However, the designs were the same in 1997 and 1999. The most common image is a standing Britannia based on a design by Philip Nathan.
On the obverse is the inscription '1 oz Fine Silver Britannia' and the year of mintage. The British Isles are readily recognisable at the lower edge of the coin.
